So, since there obviously aren't enough projects around here that need finished, I started a new, quick project on 4th of July - afternoon, no less. I have been extremely dis-satisfied with the flower garden between the patio and the deck. I have been so dis-satisfied, that when looking at pictures to show you "befores" I only had two pictures of that side of the house. Both of those pictures were to show where the patio was being bluilt. As a matter of fact, I have never posted pictures of the completed patio, most likely because I couldn't get any pictures that had a nice background in it.
In the spring, I suppose it looks nice enough. There are plenty of irises, an astilbe (that has been there forever) on the left, a newly planted small hosta on the right and a couple of other things struggling to live under the ferns (another astilbe and a bleeding heart). Later in the season (about now), coreopsis shows up at the corner of the house. Other than that - nothing.
I have planted several plants in that area previously; a red coreopsis, a red hardy geranium and a multitude of other things that have failed to live. (confession time - the geranium did live, just did not thrive).
Not only is that area not pleasing (especially when compared to the other side of the porch), but it is so sparse that the cats think it makes a fine outdoor litterbox during the winter, spring and fall.
Those are some of the reasons that I planted the Scentimental and Helen Hayes roses in there earlier this season.
I figured a couple more of the roses that I have could go in that area. Then I started looking at the colors, both of my present potted roses and of what was in that area, and decided big changes needed to be made. Sure, I like the purple irises. Sure, the red geranium with its burgandy leaves was cute. Sure, the pink bleeding heart and amethyst astilbe are fine specimens (when I bother to rip out ferns so they can be seen).
BUT, they clash horribly with the large red astilbe, red/white rose, yellow rose and yellow coreopsis. Then, the neighbor gave me some other yellow flowers that I thought would look nice next to the coreopsis and rose.
