Vick is a football player, caught not only owning a property used for dog fighting, not only taking part in the dog fighting, but also participating in the killing of dogs that were deemed no longer usefull for fightng. And the methods used were not even close to humane, among other methods: dogs had alligator clips attched to their ears, tails, lips, or even private parts, the clips were then attached to a battery and the dog thown in a pool.
Athorities had all the evidence needed to charge him, but decided instead (I never heard the official reasning) to work out a plea deal. Vick served time for racketeering, and they dropped the cruelty charges. He got out of jail a couple years ago, went right back to playing football, and lots of folks are ready to try to make hm a sports hero again. Nike has hired him as a spokesperson, and he was named Subway/BET sportsman of the year (dispite, as my husband informed me, him not having a very good season), and when Obama called the owner of the team on some other business, he apparently complimented him on giving Vick a second chance.
Needless to say he's not well liked in some communities, and I not be surprised if Obama's commemts lost him a huge portion of the animal rights comminities votes.
(this was typed on my Ipad, apologies for any misspellings)
Ruth--Thanks for the clarification. I do recall, now, having heard something about it; but, I've slept a time or two since then. He sounds like a pretty unsavory character.
Bogie--They have a cute photo posted; but, it would probably mean more to me if I had ever heard of Michael Vick!

Ruth - nice explanation, much better and more in-depth than I could have done.

I've had to explain it a few times to folks, so I've had some practice.
