Seed Starting 2010

Sunday we got out the table that goes on the deck and I started potting up seeds. I started tomatoes, peepers, cauliflower and broccoli. The cauliflower and broccoli couldn't wait to get started and within 4 days were sprouted (I actually checked the first time on Friday morning, before going to work, and they were already 1" tall):

Some of the tomatoes finally showed up on Saturday morning and are noticably shorter than the broccoli/cauliflower:

Buffy had been wondering when to start her spinach, and I wondered when to start mine. I had a couple of problems:

1. I had never actually successfully grown this before and always started it in June (when planting other vegies).
2. Perhaps I would have been successful, but I can't tell the difference between salad greens and weeds, so probably pulled them.
3. If I planted them early, they needed to be moveable to either get them out of sun on hot days, or get them in a warmer location on cold nights.

I went to the local Village Discount, looking for something else, and found what I hope is the perfect solution, small baskets:

Advance Warning

At the end of this month I will be trainig for more Census work. The training is held on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. I will be working at my normal job on Wednesday and taking vacation for the rest of the days.

I assume (we aren't told what the job we are training for) that this is for going and getting information from all the people that didn't mail back their census forms. I should get 6-8 weeeks of work out of it. During that time, I will probably not be blogging so this is your advance warning.

Birthday Ride

Mother Nature and The Wonderful Spouse conspired to give me an awesom birthday gift. Mother Nature provided an 80 degree, sunny day. WS did his part by picking up his bike out of storage and taking me for a ride. Jimmy was more than happy to go with us as we went for the earlies spring ride that I can remember.

   After stopping to pick up Jimmy, we headed thru Peterborough and into Jaffery

  We passed by Mount Monadnock.

  All the white dots on the mountain are snow. I wish I had gotten a picture of the other side, which had more snow, but it's hard to get one without trees in the way when you are do 50 mph down the road!

  We stopped for a short rest in Keene, then very wet March (we got about 3" of rain just on Monday and Tuesday, so it is still a bit full. The swamps did their job admirably this time around holding excess water and releasing it slowly so flooding was kept to a minimum - unlike those poor people down in more southern states.

I tried to get a picture of the river in Hillsboro, but I angled the camera too much and got great pictures of the railing. Oh well, everyone has seen madly rushing water, I just never get tired of seeing it when it happens.

Today I will start seeds indoors (I didn't get to it last weekend as I thought I would).
