Saw a Pileated Woodpecker yesterday. We hear them quite a bit, but rarely see them (last one I saw was at least 7 years ago).
- If I hadn't had to wait for the truck service for two hours
- If I hadn't had to do blankets and stuff at the laundry mat
- If I hadn't come home and gotten more quarters and the load I had washed at home
- If I hadn't turned around 1/2 way up the road to get a book to read while waiting for the laundry
- If the turkey hadn't been attempting to cross the road when I rounded the corner
- If I hadn't looked around to see if there were more turkeys
I would have missed the Pileated. Quite a bit of stuff had to happen to juxtapose our being in the right places at the right time.
Isn't it nice how the universe caludes with us at times, instead of against us?! Great sighting.
Here in Kansas, I heard the first house wren of the year when I gathered in the paper this morning. Eastern Phoebe came in the day after your birthday and the Myrtle warblers a bit over a week earlier than that (on which day I saw our first Hairy woodpecker in several months or a year). A Hairy woodpecker doesn't much compare with a Pileated, but we're not apt to see the big P around here any year soon.

We have plenty of Downey's and Hairy's, just don'e see anything else very often (and, not much else has a home range in this area besides the pileated and an occasional re-bellied).
And, we really pale in comparison with you guys in other birds (especially the hummers).
