Transplants

Yesterday was a good day to be outside. Well, not really - it was cloudy, windy, cold , damp and dreary - but WS and I spent most the day outside anyway.

WS was busy chipping up the brush and limbs taken out by the ice storm in December. He got all the lilacs chipped up along with a bunch of other stuff that fell into the main paths back by the greenhouse. Speaking of the greenhouse, he got that up for me since I was complaining that I had no where to put potted up seedlings.

I, of course, spent the day out on the deck repotting said seedlings. Since WS got the greenhouse up, I was able to do them all. Hopefully they are okay since it is now down in the 20's. After getting all the pots transfered up the hill, I filled the 5 gallon water containers with warm water to help keep the greenhouse warm. If we have sun for the next coupld of days, the containers will heat up and that should be enough to keep things warm during the cold nights.

Naturally, while potting up the seedlings, I had to mess up something. I now have 12 tomato seedlings that I have no idea what they are. For some reason I was thinking that there were 4 cells of each named variety of tomato. I had 6 varieties in one self watering container, so I made up 24 pots with the names written on them. Once I was done potting the 12 cells worth of tomatoes from the one container, I realized my mistake; there were only two of each variety.

At least I did better with the rest of the containers - I know the varities of tomatoes planted in the other 16 pots anyway. The pumpkins, melons and onions are all correctly marked too.

Today is an in-the-house day - homework and studying for a test. I'm sure WS will be outside enjoying the even colder weather than we had yesterday though.

Ready for Nice Weather

We picked up WS's bike out of storage last Sunday and WS got my bike out of the storage container out in the woods last night, so we are ready for the warmer weather. Too bad it will be in the 40's and rainy this weekend!

Last night I transplanted the purple and white gayfeathers that I had started from seed. This weekend I need to do the melons and such too. The tomatoes will have to hold off another week because I don't have room for any more pots than that.

Hopefully WS can get the greenhouse up pretty soon!

WS joined the Deering Fish and Game club. It is only a couple miles away and has a small outdoor range that we can use when the weather is decent. It also gives us access to a river launch. If we ever decide to fix the canoe that was given to us 7 years ago (and get paddles and lifevests), we have a place to start from anyway.

Tea Parties

Amy Kane covered the tea party in Newburyport, NH the other day. There is another one in Manchester coming up soon - I may have to join it.

I find it sad when an independent, who has never been politically active (except for voting and occasionally contacting a State Rep) feels the need not only to contact representatives on a regular basis (2-3 times per week), but to get out and join the protests.

A sad day indeed.

Another Day at Work

As Cop Car mentioned in her comment, yesterday was my birthday – not that I really celebrate my birthday or anything – and a good thing too. It should have been a Friday off from work for me, but we had calibration yesterday, so I, along with 2 weekend shift workers and 2 calibration guys spent the day at work.

The calibration guys really impressed me by stopping, with 2 items left (15-20 minutes of work if each took 1 piece) and declared that it was lunch time. If I hadn't known better, I would have thought they were union workers! They then proceeded to take 45 minutes for lunch (eating at the little sub shop less than 1/2 mile away) before coming back.

Then, one guy decided the other guy could do both of the pieces of equipment - taking 40 minutes instead of 20 minutes. Normally I am there for calibration no more than 6 hours. This time I was there for 8 - thanks guys.

Got home and took a short nap. WS got home and declared that he was there only to pick up some stuff, go back to work for a couple hours, come home get some sleep, then leave for Berlin NH by 6 AM. Going to Berlin wasn't for fun, it was for work. Evidently there was a problem with a piece they had sent out to the field and the General Contractor had already lined up all the electricians for first thing Monday morning. They didn't find out about the problem until late yesterday afternoon (WS actually got the phone call from the GM when he was less than 2 miles from home). WS has the necessary skills to solve the problem and he didn’t think he could get ahold of anyone from the shop – so he made the decision that he would take care of the problem himself. He went back to the shop to make parts and pick up equipment that he would need - getting home about 8:30. I had dinner ready so we ate and he went to bed.

He should be in Berlin by now (it is about 100 miles from here. Hopefully it doesn’t take him all day to effect the repair!

Seeds no More

The tomatoes and melons and pumpkins that I started last weekend have poked their heads out of the dirt. They are eager little beavers compared to peppers, but that is to be expected.

I have a fan on all the seedlings for at least 15 minutes a day to help them grow thick stems. I probably waste my time with that because once they get set out in the greenhouse, they don't get any such treatment. I am not running several hundred feet of extension cord to power a fan for a few minutes a day. Hmm, well maybe I'll think about it - if I got a timer and pointed the fan towards the roof, it wouldn't be too much of a hassle. Plus, then I could put a space heater out there for the cold nights, which would help them out mightily. Then I could . . .

Crap, now I'm thinking way too much!
