I was out in the flower gardens saving seeds from some of the plants; White and purple gay feather, bugbane, Husker Red penstemmon and various tall phlox. while out there, I decided to pull the mystery plant that I pictured the berries to a while ago (last picture in the post).
While pulling it, I noticed that the lower stem was covered with little thorns. That enabled me to identify it thru the book North Woods Wildflowers. It is Bristly Sarsaparilla, aka wild elder.
Now I almost feel bad, apparently it is endangered in a few states. I should have potted it up and sent it out where it is scarce. I'm sure I left plenty of root, so I'll have more next year and can send it to needy areas (hey, Harry and Heather are in Indiana, they can be my ambassadors of sharing).
Guess my day was a success, I learned something and solved a mystery all in one fell swoop.
