Although we don't suffer drought as badly as those in the midwest, we have been experiencing some dry times here at the Bogie house. We got our first measureable rainfall for a 4 week period (probably longer) on Thursday night at less than 1/4".
As much as I've been watering, I can't nearly make up for the rainfall we haven't been getting. I watered the vegie garden on Wednesday night. The sprinkler stays on about an hour to drop 1" onto the area. Thursday, I was watering again becasue it was bone dry. I also watered whatever else I could get to just in case we actually got rain, so it would soak in instead of run off.
I was happy that we got rain later Thursday night, but in getting so little I went ahead and watered the upper part of the veggie garden again Friday evening for about 1/2" (some friends came over and took us to dinner for our anniversary so the sprinkler only ran 1/2 hour).
Everything is starting to feel the stress from the lack of rain. Trees with shallow roots, like maples and sumacs, and trees that have only been in the ground a year, started turning last week - which is a bit early.
We really need a good soaker of a rain, to put everything to rights. Unfortunately, the weather pattern does not look like it is going to cooperate.
Hope WS had a great birthday and that you both had a great anniversary. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to send you emails, this week, because I was on duty for the Red Cross--in NYC! My cell phone didn't work in the Federal Building, where I was working, and I was afraid of calling you so late by the time I got out. Enough excuses??!!
Believe it or not, I was in NYC because of the Ohio flooding--some of which water you surely could have used, eh? We need to figure out a way of moving the rain clouds to where they are truly needed--after they've dumped the first 4 inches in one area.
