2 Days of Non-Stop Excitement

We had a white Thanksgiving. I shovelled twice and WS manned the snowblower once. We got a little more snow than the predicted 1-2", but we skipped the sleet and wintry mix, so I'm not complaining.

I put a ham in the crockpot and piddled around the house: planted some bulbs for forcing (I tried to plant them outside last weekend, but the ground was frozen solid for at least 6"); re-polyurathaned a shelf in my bathroom; made Tri-Layer Pumpkin Dessert; finished a book I've been working on for a month; laudry etc.

I watched parts of the first game, but gave after the 1st half, I didn't bother. I got to watch most of the Dallas / Denver game (shovelled at 1/2 time). I thought Denver had blown it, but was pleasantly surprised that they made it go into overtime - even better when they moved the ball so quickly down the field for the game-winning field goal!

WS took a nap, snowblowed and made a new tool peg-board for our gardening/snow removal tools. He just left for work, where he has to unload the truck (raw steel), then load it for a delivery first thing Monday morning. It should only take him a couple hours, but it is cold and windy, so it won't be any fun.

I will be cleaning the bird room, which isn't a whole lot of fun, but I will be nice and warm, so I'll take it!

Nothing but Problems

For the last couple of days I haven't been getting my email. This is probably the fault of my antivirus (web protection) program as it updated itself about the same time that I I started having problems getting to the email server. I don't have time to screw with it, so if you've sent me email, now you know that I haven't read it yet.

My vacuum has messed up (it's just days over 2 years old). apparently the bearings have siezed. WS had to fix that. It seems every vacuum I get has a shorter natural life-span. I think I will start buying the cheap vacuums - at least I wouldn't expect those to last very long. I think I would actually average a cheaper cost per year to buy a cheap vacuum every year too.

Had the repairman our for the stove on Friday because we have had problems with it for over a week (not the stove, the gas connection). it didn't help out much to have him out (unless you count helping out his business account cash flow). He couldn't solve the problem, but I finally got the bug worked out on Saturday.

Had to buy a new humidifier (the air gets wicked dry when running the wood stove). There is nothing wrong with the old humidifier except that no one has gotten a stock of water filter/wicks, so I can't run it. The new humidifier doesn't have replaceable filter/wick, so it should save me money in the long run. However, it also doesn't move as much water, so it isn't as effective as the old one. I didn't have much choice in which one I bought though, as that is the only one I could find.

Is it too early in the morning to get some cheese with that whine?

All Outside Stuff

Hooray - no more stacking wood! I got the last of it stacked yesterday, including all the small stuff (less than 2" in diameter) which now resides in a bin outside the lean-to that WS made specifically for that purpose. The huge stuff (logs that didn't get split or are too long) has been re-stacked just outside the lean-to also. It's a good thing that all that stuff is outside the lean-to as it is almost bursting thru the seams!

I've also relocated all the deck furniture to other areas; some under the deck and some on the pallet with the logs outside the lean-to. I haven't figured out what to do with the patio furniture yet. Normally that, too, would go under the deck but there is still a huge mound of dirt taking up most of the space (from WS digging the drainage area out from the wall). WS had hauled away a lot of the dirt, but there is still a massive pile and now it is a frozen solid massive pile. We had 2" of rain between Tuesday and Wednesday, then a crash of the temps down to the teens - there is definitely no moving the pile of dirt until next year.

The sudden temp change shortly after the rain has not helped us as the road from about 10 feet above the upper driveway and down past the lower driveway is a solid sheet of ice (from side-to-side also). The ground was doing its part in holding the water until the big freeze - now the water is pushing up thru the cracks in the road (yes, the very road that was just redone 3 years ago and will not see any more work for another 17 years unless someone very rich dies and wills a couple of billion dollars to the town and earmarks it for road work).

The water is still pushing up from below, so the ice slick is steadily enlarging itself. The road gets no sun, and the temps have stayed below 30 (oh, they keep promising us highs in the 40's, but that hasn't happened up here on the ridgeline), so we seem to be stuck with needing 4WD just to get up the road for a while. And to add insult to injury, our section is the only part of the road to exhibit this problem.

Just our luck.

My Eyes, My Eyes!

Since the KCForum abruptly shut its proverbial doors, I have been interested in finding a new forum to participate in. I thought that perhaps the KCGlobalForum would do nicely when I heard about it the other day.

I went to check it out today, and from the main site it looks pretty good. Their logo "A site for sore eyes" is impressive sounding too. Then, I clicked on the forum link and found much to my horror (and bemusement) that the forum is in black, with white writing, with tiny type and evil colors running rampant. If I concentrate very hard, I can tell what stuff is, but I don't need that headache. This is one of the hardest to read websites I have run into in a long time.

I didn't bother registering after I clicked on a few of the forum subjects and found that they were just as hard to read. I am thinking that whoever designed the site has no clue what KC does to ones eyesite, and neither does whoever is running it. After going back to the main page, and looking at the site meter at 665 visitors (and that wonderful "As Seen On TV), I decided that this has to be someone's idea of a joke and/or money making scheme.

Thanks but no thanks, the website just makes sore eyes as far as I am concerned!
