We had the woodstove going last night for the first time this year (except the short burn-in run, to drive the moisture out of the soapstone, on Thursday night). Amazingly, we have only had two frosty nights, which means we have had a fairly mild October. I guess we can thank all those systems that came up from the south, dumping massive warmish rains, for the milder temps. Of course it would be nice to have non-rainy weekends, but I guess that is wishing for too much.
It was pretty cool yesterday, getting to the low 40's after a night in the 20's. During the day, we made our own warmth by the projects we performed.
WS and Chris, the neighbor, rented a wood splitter and they split wood all day. It took about 2 1/2 hours to split Chris' wood, and about 5 hours to split ours. We should be all set for next year anyway!
I filled both wood racks (the one in the house and the large one on the deck), split kindling and moved some of this year's firewood to a better place in the lean-to.
At some point in time we will need to stack all the newly split wood, but that all depends on Harry. When he gets the back wall done, we will be busy digging out the wall. Until then, on dry days (because we might melt), we will be transporting wood to the lean-to for stacking. We also have to keep up with the raking of acorns as they get treacherous underfoot. Then at some point, we will need to suck up all the fallen leaves and throw them in the garden as mulch.
For a long fall, we still have way too much to do!
