Retirement

Lacy, who's career I've followed for the last several years thru Greg's blog, has been retired. It wasn't a planned retirement, but at least she's still alive enjoy it.

What a great career she had:

For Sale

Remember the house in this post that has no personality? Remember how it has had 5 different owners? Last week it went up for sale again. Maybe 6 is the lucky number this time.

Truly amazing.

Greener on the Other Side

Buffy has finally gotten rain in her neck of the woods world, so it is finally greening back up. We, on the other hand, have only had 1/4" of rain in the last month and that was last Saturday. This was the last week of watering for me (except stuff in pots and a peony I just put in a couple of evenings ago). It is late enough in the season that everything can go dormant without causing any harm (but at least our grass weeds are still green).

My vegetable garden is still a sad little thing. I finally got something like 8 tomatoes out of it last week (that's less than 1 per plant) and I have only gotten 2 peppers (less than 1/4 per plant - I now remember why I never plant sweet peppers!). Needless to say, I won't bother watering that either.

The bright spots are: the mulch bin has produced some large potato plants - we'll see if we get a good crop of those this year; and beside the mulch bin are what appear to be some watermelons growing (2 last I checked). I have never gotten any type of melon to grow, and now I get 2 from plants I din't start or even water. There is something extremely wrong with this picture!

Thanks for Nothing

I would like to take this opportunity to thank ABC and ESPN for royally screwing up my football watching last night.

There were two Monday night games on last night; the regularly scheduled 9 PM game between Dallas and the Redskins; and a special "home" game opener for the New Orleans Saints against the Giants - starting at 7:30.

The way it was supposed to work: Show the 7:30 game on ABC until 9, then switch that game over to ESPN.

The way it worked: Show the 7:30 game on ABC until 8:55. At which time, Chris Berman told everyone to "switch over to ESPN now, the game is on over there.". At which point we switched to ESPN and saw the last 5 minutes of golf.

Let me mention that the Saints appeared to have stopped a drive by the Giants, just before half-time, with enough time to perhaps tie the score - but there was a penalty on that play and we were breathlessly waiting for the call.

Then - they switched out of that game to a bunch of commercials in preparation for the 9 PM game - and no game on ESPN. Then, at 9 PM, ESPN got their stuff together (not really) and started showing football - THE FREAKIN DALLAS GAME THAT WAS ON ABC! AAAARRRRGGGGGHHHH!

Granted, I wasn't going to watch much longer, just until half-time, but I still wanted to know what the hell happened!

Oh, and did I mention that the Saints' game was a driving force of fund raising efforts for the victims of Katrina? After ESPN didn't show their portion of the game, I'll bet donations went down drastically!

UPDATE:

WS tells me that ESPN finally changed over to the Saints game.

Categorizing

After Cop Car started her new cooking blog, and Val started wondering how to make categories on Blogger so that she had a place for her recipes, I decided it was time to make a category for the recipes that I have posted (like that run-on sentence?).

So, if you look in the categories, over on the right sidebar, you will find the brand new "Cooking" category. I believe that I have transferred all my recipe posts over there so they are easier to find.

So, I got this email joke from a friend of mine (one I haven't seen in far too long - I will have to rectify that situation!), and I about died laughing at the end. New Words, Birds and Miscellany

I have discovered a new contraction that has recently come into being. I have seen it used a couple of time on the KC Forum where I occasionally lurk. That contraction is "amn't", as in "I amn't using correct English in this sentence."

For those interested in bird watching there are two sites that I have recently become aware of. One is a blog put out by Duncraft and features interesting stories, reader's pictures and tips on bird feeding. It is put on by a retail outlet, so expect them to feature some of their products, but it still has some good stuff.

The other site is one I found thru Duncraft's blog, the Online Bird Guide, and it looks quite interesting. This allows you to search the bird database by different attributes, location, scientific name etc. It looks like it should be really handy, but I have not used it yet so don't know for sure.

We haven't had any rain in almost 3 weeks (as of Sunday). Seems like everyone else in the state got rain yesterday, but not us. Oh sure, the porch was wet so it looked like it rained, but the rain guage and the dry dirt tell a different story. So, I am still watering the vegetable garden and anywhere that I have planted stuff in the last 2 months. Anything else should be established enough, and the clay should hold enough moisture, that I shouldn't have to water. The grass lawn weeds are still green anyway.

Crock Pottery

Because Cop Car put up her chow blog, I had to trot one out of my own. It is a crock pot main course that has gotten great reviews from some of our friends (which may be suspect, because some of our friends, not to name name or anything [Jim], wouldn't eat unless invited over to a friends house for a meal or buying it at a restaurant). Anyhoo, I actually made this for dinner tonight.

Jazzy Steak Tips

• 2 lbs stew meat or cubed steak (roast or whatever - just beef, or maybe buffalo anyway)
• 12 oz. jar mushrooms or 2 cups fresh sliced mushrooms
• 1 regular sized can cream of mushroom soup
• 1 envelope dry onion soup mix
• 1 Cup Smirnoff Ice Black (7-up or Sprite or something along the limon line)
• 2 Tbl teriyaki sauce (worcestershire sauce or cooking Sherry - teriyaki is best though)
