In previous posts, I have mentioned that even with the exciting event of a pair of cardinals hanging around, I would like to see an indigo bunting again. 2-3 summers ago we had an indigo bunting visit our feeder on a regular basiis - but that was the only year he made and appearance.
Tonight, while doing the dishes, I was admiring the male cardinal feeding underneath the feeders in the back yard. Pretty soon, I realized there was a blue form on the feeders, and my first reaction was "What the heck is a blue jay doing on the thistle feeder?" When I sighted in on the bird, I realized it was a male indigo bunting. I got out the binoculars for a better look, to make sure it wasn't a blue bird, which would be a first (he was in the shade so it was hard to tell). Sure enough, it was an indigo bunting. I literally did a little jig and yelled "SCORE!" (puzzling the heck out of the dogs).
He flew off shortly afteward, but returned after The Wonderful Spouse got home, so he got to see it shortly after I told him of my sighting. Maybe his mate is the drab brown little bird I sighted on the front feeder a week ago or so. At that time I figured it was some sort of sparrow, but now I wonder.
I hope he (and maybe she) stick around; it would be really colorfull between the red cardinals, blue jays, indigo bunting, yellow goldfinches and the red breasted grosbeak. Let's not forget the scarlet tanager - I haven't seen him yet, but have heard his song.
God! am I a geek or what?
That is so super cool! If you are a geek, you are the nicest kind of geek. Congratulations!
