We got plenty of rain on Saturday - 1 1/2" by the trusty rain gauge. That might not sound like much, but the trusty rain gauge only got to fill with rain after 11 AM. We had a hard, stead rain for at least 6 hours before I put the gauge in place, so I am figuring I missed the first inch or so of rain. Add that to the couple of inches we had on Monday, and the snow melt, and the sum equals saturated ground, swollen rivers and streams and swamps that are temporarily extending their borders.
The flooding began in earnest late yesterday afternoon. We went to Henniker for dinner, passing thru the east side of Hillsboro, and saw the river had once again flooded out the High Tide restaurant and Edgewater produce stand (they had been flooded out last fall after one of the hurricanes came through). I don't think that the new owner of the High Tide, who bought the restaurant last June or July, is likely to be amused by the seemingly apt name of the place.
Fortunately, we got a break yesterday, and although it was cloudy, we just got sprinkles and short bursts of showers. Today, it is supposed to start raining again; the break in rainfall yesterday will probably keep the waters from reaching too much higher.
We, here at the Bogie homestead, are not about to float away though. The snow has held up admirably and soaked up plenty of the rain - to slowly release it later. However, the snow is also at the saturation point, so any rain falling today is not going to be held back.
The small babbling brook in the front yard (drainage ditch) may turn into a high-powered stream yet. Hey, at least I didn't have to shovel 7" of snow like Cleveland did!
