As I was going thru the town police logs in the local gossip paper, I noticed an incident on April 8 at 5:20 in the morning; a car hit a moose on Rt.149. If it hadn't occurred on a Friday that I had off, it could have been me. Although they don't tell us what part of 149 it was on, I'm betting it's the portion that I travel to work. 5:20 is definitely within the time-frame that I am traveling the Deering part of 149. lucky for me, I was at home that day. Not so lucky for the other guy.

We had several weeks without rain (since the flooding 3 weeks ago) and it has been dry enough that NH has had several wild fires a day for the last week or so. I think that the fire danger is over for now; we have gotten about 2 1/2 inches of rain since Friday night. It has been, for the most part, a slow soaker, so the rain hasn't just run off. However, now we are under a flood watch until tomorrow afternoon. It's either feast or famine this spring!

Yesterday, we put up a temporary cold-frame for the tomatoes. We got several bales of straw for the "walls" and used the door from the old greenhouse for the top. We saved several of the panels from the greenhouse, when we tore it down, and are hoping to build a more permanent cold-frame later in the year. But for now, the tomatoes seem to be happy just not to be crowded into the lights and the cool, cloudy weather is perfect for adjusting them to the (relative) outdoors. Now I just have to hope that mice don't find it the perfect refuge from weather and cats - with a meal or two in the bargain!

The sun is trying to peek thru the clouds, and the rain has stopped for the time being. I believe I hear the birds outside demanding to be fed. So this is the end of this weekend's update.
I envy you the cold frame. I swear each year that I will get one set up, and time always gets away from me. Luckily for me, there are several nurseries nearby which carry the varieties I'd like to grow.
Good luck with your tomatoes!

Oh, they seem happier than heck in there. In fact, although I planted a month later than usual, they are larger tahn I ever had in the greenhouse.
Unfortunately, that was not the plan - I need them to stay smaller!
(hey, I can bitch about almost anything!).
