Happy Anniversary

Today is our 19th Anniversary [counting fingers and toes because it sure doesn't seem that long], yep, 19 would be the number. How the hell did time pass so quickly?

He's 43

I'd say Happy Birthday to the Wonderful Spouse here today, but since he doesn't read it, it wouldn't do any good.

Too late, I already said it - guess I'll have to go tell him in person now!

It's What's for Dinner

They only drive me crazy because I haven't found a good recipe for them. Now live ones, mm-mm-good!

On the Homefront

I finally got to pick 4 more ripe tomatoes. It has been so cool (nights down in the 40's, days in the 60's low 70's), rainy and gloomy that the last time there were any ripe tomatoes was August 5th. Yesterday the weather changed and now it is hot and humid. It is 70 degrees right now (the warmest night we have had all summer) and very humid. It is supposed to get up to 90, and the humididty is not supposed to go away. 90 and dry, as it was all week, would still be hot, but bearable. Someone definitely screwed up my order when I was requesting weather?

Yesterday, the Wonderful Spouse picked up a truckload of cedar mulch so we spread it down in the area that at the end of the driveway. I'll have to disturb the mulch when the bulbs come in, but that is another month or so down the road, and I wanted to get the ground covered as Buffy is doing.

Harry finished up with the windows on ednesday. Thursday evening WS stained the inside trimwork on one window and yesterday I stained the trim on the other. The outside trim still needs to be painted, but that is part of what we are paying Harry for. Hopefully he will be in tomorrow to finish that up. I remembered to take "before" shots, and will take "after pictures to post at some point.

Good News - Bad News.

Some good reasons for living in New Hampshire; low poverty rate, high income and low uninsured rate. We top the country in the first two catagories and tie for second in the last catagory.

I'm not the only one that didn't get any peaches this year. The extremely cold winter nipped the buds off of most of the trees, so there are very few locallty grown peaches available this year.

Then there are those that tried to make hay during the cool, wet summer. That's not going so well either. We did have a good stretch of dry weather this week, so hopefully that helped some of the farmers out.

Maybe with the horrible weather, the living in this state isn't such a good thing for some.

Apparently our state has a new symbol since the Old Man of the Mountain slid down said mountain.

However, none of that mattered to this young college-bound woman, who has lost her horse thru terrible circumstances.

And, to end on a happier note, check out the pictures from the peregrine cam. Although the cam is offline now, the best pictures have been put up on the website. Two chicks were banded, and I presume have survived up to this point. Hopefully they'll have more info up later this year.

Charlie Sherman

I reported back in March that Charlie Sherman, a popular sportscaster for the local TV station, had resigned. He is back on the air, although not in TV. He is now one of the hosts for a talkshow for local radio stations.

I don't normally listen to AM radio, but I may have to tune in to enjoy his sense of humor!

Sunday and Monday Doings

All the flowers that we received last week are planted, as are a bunch of strawberry plants (didn't watch any football or racing - drats!). I had forgotten that the neighbor gave us more strawberry plants and they have been sitting in a tub of water for at least 2 weeks. Fortunately it has rained often which has kept the roots in water. If they had relied on my memory, they would have dried up and blown away long ago.

We had a good time at the company party, despite the rain. The banquet was set up in the garage (as it is every year) and consisted of salad, potato salad, steak, chicken, baked beans (with hamburger thrown in) and rolls.

Desert consisted of ice cream sundaes (do-it-yourself), 2 kinds of cookies and strawberry/rhubarb fruit bars. Believe me, nobody went away hungry.

Several discussions ensued and I found that we were definitely living in the wrong town. Apparently in Webster, any part of a house that is below ground level is not counted as part of the house for assessment purposes. It doesn’t matter whether the below ground portion is finished or not – it doesn’t exist as far as the town is concerned.

So, in Webster, a three level house is considered a 1 bed and 1 bathroom house because the other two bedrooms and bathroom are below grade. Damn, our town will tax a dog house (I’m just making that part up – but it seems like it) and considers anything with more than 3 fixtures an extra bathroom. A fixture is a single-basin sink, toilet, bidet, tub or shower. Our town was re-assessed this summer and one of my pet-sitting clients found he had two bathrooms attached to his master bedroom because it has more than 3 fixtures in it (a double basin sink and a separate shower stall from the tub did him in) – bummer!

Harry finally got to put in the bay window for the living room. It still needs to have the trim work and the siding finished off, but it looks great. We moved the outdoor furniture and the furniture in the front room so that Harry can work on the other window today.

I had to take my truck in for its first oil change after work last night. Yep, I’ve already got 3750 miles on it (the mileage for the 1st oil change).

Rain Delay

The window replacement got delayed by the rain. It is supposed to rain all of today too (should make the company party fun). Now Harry is shooting for the beginning of next week for the installation.

Pictures Are Us

Surprise, surprise, I remembered to take the film in to be developed. Unfortunately, after having the 2 rolls of film for a week, for some reason only 1 roll has been developed to date. Oh well, I still have some pictures to show. That first one is obviously a picture of my new truck. And yes, those are the irises that Cop Car sent me this spring in the flower bed that is in the foreground.

Order's Up

The plants I ordered came in Wednesday. The only problem was that the two plants I really wanted, Fan Scarlet and Fan Deep Rose lobelias, are sold out – so I didn’t get any of those. However, everything else came in, so I can at least get most of the planting done.

The weirdest thing was that they came in a hugely over-sized box (no, that’s not weird, next is the weird part) stuffed right full of packing peanuts. WS and I spent quite a bit of time scooping peanuts out by hand until enough of them were removed to even get to the point where we could pull some of the plants out. Then even more time was spent getting the peanuts out from around the leaves. I would have expected air-paks or bubble wrap, but never in my wildest dreams did I think they would pack them in peanuts.
