While I was transplanting perinnials from the driveway planter box to the planter box under the fence. I saw something that I've never seen before. It was feeding off the blooming chives and at first glance looked like a hummingbird. But it looked strange for a hummingbird, and I was fairly close and it was unconcerned, so I looked closer.
Indeed what I saw was a hummingbird moth. The strange coincidence was that a friend and I were talking about them Saturday night. She had seen one at her aparment in Mass., and I had never seen a live one but had done some research about it for a friend last year on her 'baby hummingbird".
Of course I ran in to get a camera, but much to my dismay the Wonderful Spouse had taken all the film to DC with him (and the camera I had was empty). However, I can't blame the missing of a picture opportunity on him as the moth was gone when I got back anyway.
That's okay, I stole a nice picture from GoldfishPond.net:

That's a good image of the moth.
I have some of that moss phlox it is feeding on. I love its little blue freckles.
I tried to get a photo of these critters last year, but they were never very cooperative. I need to get a digital with a better zoom, I think.

I can see how getting a good picture would be difficult. At least they let you get closer than the birds do!
