The Iditarod dog sled race in Alaska starts today. There are currently 64 entries in the race that commemorates the famous diptheria syrum delivery in 1925. For more complete background, check out THIS web page.
This year they will be taking the southern route, since it is an odd number year (the northern route is taken is even numbered years). My understanding is that this years race will be slightly longer than most years because the trail has been routed away from thin ice, which has developed because of the abnormally warm winter there (if I'd known, I would have sent them some of our frigid weather). Hopefully the re-routing will keep the dogs and mushers safe.
Good luck to all the teams - hope everyone stays safe and healthy!
