My computer survived the installation of Office 2003. Actually, much to my surprise, I didn't have any problems. I had it save my old Office 2000, so that if it gives me massive problems I can just go back to my previous version. The only thing that concerned me was that installing 2003 required that the old Outlook be uninstalled and the 2003 version take it's place. I took a moment to think about it, and decided what the heck - go for it.
All went smoothly and I got Office registered (a pain in the butt and one of the reasons I never went to Office XP). I took a quick look at Word and Outlook. Word was pretty much as usual (I didn't even type anything into it, so I'm just talking cosmetics here). The only difference was that there is a sidebar that shows the recently used documents and a couple of quick links. This might be something that Office XP has - I've never used it so don't know. I could see how it would be handy, but if you have a small monitor it would take up too much realestate. However, you can get rid of the sidebar, so it's no big deal.
Outlook was rather funky looking when I brought it up. As a matter of fact, I was kind of lost because there was way too much stuff there. I'm sure that it can be modified, which I will probably do, but I'll give it a go for a couple of weeks to see if it just takes getting used to. I'll capture a screen shot this weekend and post it so you can see what I'm talking about.
I didn't install anything but Office 2003 this time around. Later I will install Publisher and Visio (if I figure out which disk it is on - there are 15 disks because they send everything; server stuff and other business applications). Hopefully I will have some time to play with Office this weekend and see what is different. Just keep in mind that I don't know what is on Office XP, so I may end up describing stuff that is old hat to other people. I also don't really have much for high-end needs, so may miss the most usefull additions to the suite.
