If They Run Out, They Can Have Some of Ours

Syracus, NY school students have sent ants into space as an experiment and to test the hypothesis that the ants would tunnel more slowly in space. Instead the found that they seem to tunnel more quickly (that would have been my guess - less gravity to slow them down, and aren't ants just hyper anyway?). If they decide to do this experiment again, I've got about 2 trillion ants in the yard - with anthills everywhere you look or step (yes, even in the main pathways) - which we would be happy to donate in the name of science.

I'm glad that Richard Reid, the wannabe Shoebomber got a life sentence. I commend the judge in his handling of the rhetoric given by this terrorist:

We are not afraid of any of your terrorist co-conspirators, Mr. Reid," said the judge. "We are Americans. We have been through the fire before.

"You are not an enemy combatant - you are a terrorist. You are not a soldier in any war - you are a terrorist. To call you a soldier gives you far too much stature. You are a terrorist, and we do not negotiate with terrorists. We hunt them down one by one and bring them to justice."

The judge then pointed to the American flag behind him and said: "You see that flag, Mr. Reid? That's the flag of the United States of America. That flag will fly there long after this is long forgotten."

I think this is a fairly accurate description, although those that know me may think I am more forcefull (opinionated and pushy) than the score indicates. I think all my friends would agree that I was hard to get to know at first (because I don't make friends easily) but I am fiercely loyal once a friendship is established.

Wild Birds

The birds seem hungrier this year than usual. We feed wild birds during the winter and spring using: two smaller suet cakes holders (6? x 6? x 1?), one large suet cake holder (12 x 12 x 2) and one large seed dispenser. The suet is going like hotcakes this year. The birds have been going through 3 ? 4 smaller suet cakes and 1/2 large suet cake per week. This is more than they ever ate before; we added the larger suet cake holder just four weeks ago because they are going through so much.

Maybe that means I?ll have a banner year for the NH Audubon Society Winter Bird Survey coming up Feb. 8-9. Actually that probably means that the birds will have stuffed themselves so full that they will disappear as usual. It seems that we usually turn in what seems to be measly numbers for where we live. The surprising thing this year is that I haven?t seen any crows or blue jays in our yard.

I just found out there is a National Great Backyard Bird Count, as a joint venture of the National Audubon Society and Cornell Lab of Ornithology, held on Feb. 14-17 (Valentines Day thru President?s Day). Wild Birds Unlimited has the best explanation of the National count that I have seen so far. I?ll have to remember to participate.

High-Tech Economy Hurts NH's Dropouts. One would think that even kids could understand this. But I have heard with my own ears teenagers say they can't wait until they're 16 so they can drop out of school, get a job, and make lots of money. Heck, I've got a Bachelor's Degree and I don't make as much money as some of these kids seem to think they are worth.

Styker's Back

John Stryker of Sgt. Stryker's Daily Briefing has resumed posting. Although he is just a part of the team that posts to SSDB, his return is certainly noticed and welcomed.

Black House

I finished Black House by Stephen King and Peter Straub yesterday. It took me a long time to read it (I started it just before Christmas), becauseI haven't had a lot of time to do much reading. I had a hard time getting into the book at first, but was hooked after a couple of chapters. I really got to care for the people (except that twit of a reporter and of course the Fisherman) and the town. I was surprised at the ending because a lot more people survived than I expected.

I liked both endings to the book. For those looking for a happy ending - stop at the first ending. For those that follow the Gunslinger series, go ahead and read the second ending. The authors' give plenty of warning between the two endings, so don't blame them if you wanted a happy ending but chose to read to the very end.

Now I have to go back and read Talisman, which is the prequel to Black House. For some reason I never read it but will have to rectify that mistake.

Hey, I just gotta be proud of the fact that Bogieblog is the top spot if you are searching for story swap spouse snow. I'm not sure if someone was looking to swap stories with their spouse in the snow or if they were looking to swap spouses in the snow so they had stories to tell later.
