Cat Food and Dog Food Recall

Thanks to Scary Yankee Chick, I probably know why I have found three cat yacks, not of the hairball type, in the last 3 weeks (and, since going to grain free diets, cat yacks are extremely rare). Diamond, which makes several brands of dog and cat foods, has recalled some of the food that I have been feeding the cats, Taste of the Wild. The recall is for possible salmonella contamination. Although healthy cats (and dogs) probably won't be affected, Shadow is older and is obviously weaker than he used to be.

I just checked the bag that I have been feeding them from, and it is on the list. The bag I have in reserve, is not on the list. But, I don't get the warm fuzzies as the cat food was just added and I have been feeding from the open bag for a while. I think I will get another grain free brand, Earthborn, which I used to feed them anyway.

Here are brands affected:

  • Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul
  • Country Value
  • Diamond
  • Diamond Naturals
  • Premium Edge
  • Professional
  • 4Health
  • Taste of the Wild
  • Canidae
  • Kirkland
  • Apex

For exact recall information and how to check the manufacturing and date codes, go to this website. And yes, I will be contacting them for a refund.

I gotta admit we're wondering if that explains why Arty has had random diahrea for the last couple months. The dogs are mostly raw fed but they enjoy the occasional treat of kibble (and yes, they consider it a treat, but don't want it on a regular basis). On the other hand if thats the only symptom he had from salmonella I'll take it. I do know someone who's dog got violently ill a month ago, bloody diahrea, vomiting, the works. A course of antibiotic cleared it up, and they never tested for salmonella (why should they?), but now she wonders, she feeds TOTW too and every bag she had in the house was recalled.

Cat yack is gone - nothing since I switched. Took in the almost full bag yesterday and got a store credit since I don't have the receipt. I'll take that - better than getting a coupon for a bag of the same stuff. Think I'll stay away from it for a while.
