Fighting Mice and Black Flies

Some friends of mine go out nursery-hopping every Mother's Day. This year I was asked if I would like to join them and of course, I went. We hit a couple of greenhouses (no, smart alecks, we didn't actually hit them, we drove over and browsed the plants) and everyone got at least a couple of plants.

Since my tomato and pepper seeds did so dismaly, I got a couple of six-packs of sweet-peppers, jalapeno peppers and tomatoes. I was looking for paste-type tomatoes, but couldn't find any. I'll have to look elsewhere for those. I also picked up some creeping thyme, to plant around stepping stones, and a couple of perinnials (don't remember exactly what right now). The perinnials and thyme will get planted sometime this week. The peppers and tomatoes are under grow lights in the house (not taking chances that Mister Mouse will find them), and can't be planted until June 1, the frost-free date.

I believe I know how to foil Mister Mouse so that I can eventually put the vegetables in the greenhouse; I should be able to move the table toward the center - away from any ledges that the mouse can use to get on the table. It will just be a pain in the butt since there is all kinds of stuff being stored under the table. The legs of the table are also very rickety so I will have to be very careful during the move.

The Wonderful Spouse had to give the lawn its first mowing of the season yesterday. He did that while I was planting the strawberry plants, and I must say that his results look a lot better than mine do. It will be interesting to see what kind of attrition rate I achieve with the planting (a dubious achievment at best!). After WS mowed, we set to raking the lawn. Unlike most people, we rake the lawn to get the smaller (relatively speaking) stones out - not to pick up grass clippings. It keeps us off the streets at night anyway!

Bogie was speaking of black flies (well, actually, she promised black flies in the title, but I don't recall her ever actually getting around to black flies), and that triggered a memory I'd shared with Acidman last Friday. A few... [Read More]

If you had small children, you could pay them 5 cents for each bucket of stones that they gather--a la our Seattle days! Maybe you can train the cats?

You realize that could have been titled "Of Mice and Men (and Black Flies)"???

I don't start a lot of seeds indoors any more. In the long run, it's cheaper for me to buy plants that are already started.

I adore the thin French beans known as haricots verts. There are several of this variety offered in my seed books, and I fall for them each year. I go out and industriously plant them, and each year the deer and bunnies eat them down to bare stalks before they even bloom. It's depressing. So, I can commiserate with you over Mr. Mouse. Bogie 1, Mouse zilch!

Cop Car - I tried to get the cats too help but Indy is too lazy and can't stand to be in the sun. Shadow is only awake at night, so isn't around for the training. And Tory is still just a bit gimpy; don't want him to strain anything.

Buffy - I started planting my own seeds because for a long time it was hard to find starts for the peppers and tomatoes I like. Until the last couple of years you wouldn't see any habenaros, tai hots or seranos or the paste tomatoes that I like to use for salsa. It might be cheaper but then how would I build character by going thru the trials and tribulations of fighting mice (or a couple of years ago it was aphids in the greenhouse)?

Oh--Buffy & Bogie--you two make me sick! Such energy should be illegal--LOL.

I stumbled across your blog while I was doing some online research. I haven't actually tried this myself, but someone just recently told me that soaking cotton balls in peppermint oil drives mice away. Might be worth a try!
